Husky 365 wont start in cold weather?

Hi,

I was helping out a mate today clearing some beech that's been down for a while and had a hell of a time getting his husky 365 started. He's just put up with it like that for a few years and says that leaving it in the sun for an hour if possible or sitting it on a radiator for a while gets it started no probs as usual. This only happens in very cold weather.

I was wondering what could be the cause of this? I even took the spark plus out and heated it with the blowtorch this morning and it made no difference. Sat the whole saw on the radiator for 20 mins and it started no problem. Any advice appreciated guys,

cheers, toosharp :)

I had one but never this trouble. If you take the plastic cover off the top does it have a dividing partition with a hole in it? Tape securely over hole from both sides if no flap already in place to use.

Remember to remove in warmer weather.

I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can see what you've mentioned. Thanks

How old is his petrol? (NO, I am not punting Aspen this time!)

Petrol is formulated differently from summer to winter.

Summer petrol is less volatile than winter petrol, so in cold weather it does not vaporise as easily leading to poor starting, so this could be the cause. If so its easily proved by buying fresh fuel.

Conversely, if you are still using winter fuel in the spring and summer it will vaporise too easily and can lead to vapour in the fuel lines, known as 'vapour lock'.

One thing I would check is that the choke is sealing correctly when set to "on" and also does the saw revs well when started on the "Fast Idle" setting, a common starting issue is this setting not holding the throttle open enough.

Also worth checking the L screw setting is at one turn out - if it is out much more, this may cause issues.

Oh, one last thing - check the coil to flywheel gap - if this is too great, the spark may be weak.

Try starting with the decomp out - if the compression is a bit low, this will not help!
