I was emailed today from freinds of the earth and this made me think, do they know the real facts on this, and wondered what's the points of view from the people who deal with the trees??

Seems a little ignorant and populist to me. Yes, our glorious leaders could have banned the import of ash, but it seems unlikely that would have halted it for long if at all. It's not very likely that all the uk cases sprang from the first reported case in imported material seeing the spread of diseased trees.

The spores are wind born, they would have got here in the end, it's the reaction and consequent measures that are being put in place that they could have come up with a couple of years ago.

I'm not to impressed and seams like there exploiting things cause it came in a email asking for a donation to help fund a way to help the problem

It reads like an anti-govt rant without actually saying anything.

 

Chalara was always going to get here - the best we could in preparation was to initiate a breeding programme to establish a resistant population. Genetic markers for resistance could have been looked for and orchards set up. As far as I know (please correct me if I'm wrong) not one country has identified markers associated with resistance yet.

 

One way to speed this up is to encourage it to spread as quickly as possible - resistant trees will soon become apparent. Contentious, but true.

I can't help in thinking that this Chalara outbreak is just a little too convenient. Certainly drew the publics attention away from other issues, and I'm sure there is something big going on behind the Chalara smokescreen. We will have to wait to find out exactly what that is. Given that the reported stats from the Denmark example were shall we say a little misleading, as usual it just goes to prove once again that no one can really be relied upon, governments (which party is totally irrelevant) or newspapers.

So who does this leave? Tbh, us.

everyone is fighting to be allocated all or part of the £7milllion allocated for this crisis, they will fight like Beeearches tooth and nail to have the funds and come out as the leading light on the subject.
