Stolen ????

Been buying and selling a fair bit of Stihl equipment this last year.

Mostly bought in job lot from various auctions etc, so i know where its all come from, history, etc.

However these are drying up a bit so i've started looking on the auction sites, in the local rags etc.

Does anyone know where to contact to check serial numbers etc to ensure what i'm buying isn't nicked ?

I'd be gutted if i put money into the thieving gits hands, never mind the fact that i'd gotten hold of someone else's tools.

Just bought a little Makita and although i know the saws history (one owner from new), i rang the police as a tester to see if they could check it out......

No joy there

Thanks, Dave

I doubt there is a nationwide scheme in place, apart from dealers having records of new saws etc sold, and maybe one or two reported thefts, I don't think there is a real attempt to crack down. One dealer even told me that it's not in their interest to make it too difficult for thieves, as a huge amount of their sales are insurance replacements!!

Since common sence is not in the best interest of the consumer, I believe no such data base will ever be available to help. Simple enough to implement since same information gathered could and would benefit the dealers from a marketing standpoint as well.

Circular firing squad for the most part since the insurance industry is already complicit by admitting as much they don't want to loose the business in the process. All consumers

are left paying the higher prices for all everything. Apathy is and always will be bad for business.

Would it not be possible to add a directory on here that people could fill in... like a form that takes all that data.. agreed it would be a ball ache to fill in but if/when item gets stolen its flagged on the directory and the any appearance of said item for sale would then become police matter, I know its a lot of work for someone but is it not time we got proactive cos let's face it no one else will.

Wise words above and sadly so true. The only national database in the UK is the voluntary Immobilise :: The National Property Register, for phones, gadgets, bikes & more.... Otherwise you're going to individually need to check for data dots, data spots, data tags, data smudges, funny water etc.

It would be far too sensible to practise the idea that if you didn't register on a recognised national database you couldn't insure. Honest folk would go for it, the insurance industry wouldn't.

Sorry to disagree but there IS a national register. I have a mate in the Plod who says one of the places they use is TER plant register to check ownership... as do some insurance companies.

You can register up to 5 items for free.

I know this might not help original poster as many domestic users probably don't use it.

Hope this helps..

I have my 5 free items on there....anything for free has to be worth having.... hopefully I'll never find out whether it's any good! :001_tongue:

Nice one.

I know it might not necessarily give you the bits back in any use-able order, but my main hope was that it would lead to the conviction of the dirty rotten b'tds that take the kit.

p.s. my local crime prevention team used to do the UV marking kits (meant for TV's Vids) so I marked post codes on the inside of covers. Belt/Braces affair.

All you need is a unique identifying mark on most stuff, the more obscure the better.... Scratching your postcode or even a little symbol into a hidden bit of casting somewhere and photographing it will be all the evidence needed to prove it was yours if recovered. Additionally, it doesn't devalue it, unlike hot engraving into plastics, and it's 'transferable' to any future [legitimate] owners as well if you pass the info on.

As I'm stripping down / servicing my own saws I'm doing this to them....

I worded myself badly so you're quite right. I meant that there isn't one single national register used for just about anything. The (non-existent) system's a hotch potch; the apparent fact that only some insurance companies check TER proves it!

Not to bash insurance companies too much though perhaps someone can offer examples of reduced premiums for registering kit somewhere.
