Advice on A road traffic control

Hi all just been asked by a local estate if i can fell a large ash as there latest tree survey said it needs to be felled. About 5/6ft across at the base all dead apart from a few suckers dotted around it. Its a couple of meters away from a major A road 3lane job. Its really weighted towards the road. We have access to a big tractor to pull it over (if all goes well) i wouldnt be happy about doing it without the road closed totally though!

 

Soy questions are how easy is it to get a major road closed totally for half hour?

 

What sort of price would i be looking at for traffic control?

As its for more than 10 mins, you will need a diversion put in place and personally I would want to give yourself the luxury of additional time for the FUBAR factor.

I'd say your looking at £450.00 for TM company and the local authority cost in excess of £1000.00 alone you need to confirm with the LA highways on what they charge. Also A roads will be a Sunday only option and take 5-6 weeks to book as they have to be advertised in the local press.

 

Your client may have kittens

 

Also a handing fee for your risk and time 17.5% is good for me.....

You may want client to pay the TM company and LA as the LA want payment in advance therefore you don,t get the uplift but you don,t take the risk of your client refusing to pay once the job is complete.

 

Caution on damaging the highways too as you will be charged for damages....

Your local TM specialist will design all the required TM and will know what your LA finds acceptable it can be very variable...

i was thinking to my self that its going to be a nightmare and didnt think you would be able to close the road completely easily, maybe it would be better to close one lane of traffic and dismantle the road side till it will definetly fell the other way, would that be any cheaper do you think? and easier to sort out? they want it sorted out asap as if it was to fail or shed a limb its in a exposed hill top with just open fields infront of it, has a history of big limbs dropping off it. now they have had the survey they will be liable for anything etc etc.

Was thinking about the notice of road closure. If its emergency case then little notice is required. Could be a state that the tree will fall in road if a storm comes through.

 

Go for one or two lane closure, they will be a lot more happy with that than a complete closure. Surely a complete is not needed as the tree can't be overhanging three lanes?

If 1 lane was closed ideally 2 i could go up the road side stem and strip all the back leaning weight off, which is probs the way im going to have to do it i think. The estate just wanted me to straight fell it and leave it they bring tractor to pull it. I said its to risky, it would be fine but i cant take that risk it will need road closed to fell it straight, but it seems will be more cost effective to dismantle it with 1-2 lanes closed off

Could you get traffic lights booked and then use a hold all red when you go for the money shot? May be more time effective than a dismantle, and more cost and paperwork effective than a road closure

 

thats what i was originally thinking of doing dan, but if the worst does happen and it does go back onto the road it could cause alot of time people waiting and getting more angry waiting for us to clear the road. im just thinking the worst case really it probs would be fine and fell into the road put you never no if a rope breaks, how rotten the center is hinge snaps gust of wind. etc etc ive got a experienced forester im working for tomorow were driving past it so hes going to have a look for me if its fellable he reackons then no worries ill go for the fell. :thumbup1:

Id use steel if you're pulling a back leaner with a tractor, less worry about breaking ropes. Also make sure you haven't got a throttle happy driver, early pulls can be bad news! Good luck however you go for it, let's see some pics! Got one very similar myself in a few weeks:D
