550xp bar size

Hi there. Im curious to know whether any of you guys run a 20" bar on a 550xp?

I ask because i will be coming across a few bigger tree's (wider than the 15" bar and chain which im currently running). I know you can fell a tree which is wider than your bar, but i also have a few bigger stumps and some bucking todo.

no way.. 15 inch maxx but you can fell 28inch- 30 if your lucky with that anyway

I wouldn't put a 20" bar on any 50cc saw - the 550's fairly torquey but I think 20" is asking too much of it. It might pull it for a while but it's going to put some pain on the clutch.

 

Mine lives with a 13" mainly but did put a 15" on it in some sycamore and it was fairly convincing.

But yes, so far it's the best all round 50cc saw I've ever used.

I've had a 20" on mine.

Had a row of 10 or so ash to fell, when working away from home hedgelaying. They ranged from 30" to about 45" and I only had the 550, a 346xpg and an ms 210.

I'm not really a tree surgeon, hedgelaying is my thing so I did not see much sense in buying a bigger saw for the one job.

 

It actually coped quite well I thought, but then the trees were not very sound in the centre so quite soft.

A 13" bar normally lives on my 550, but I have an 18" one for use with the sawhorse.

The sawhorse is nominally 12" across, but between crooked logs and the uprights not allowing the saw to get to the full depth of the bar under some circumstances, the 18 incher goes on for that particular job.

I'm only cutting stuff from brush handle size up to around 6" or so at the moment, but the 550 drives the 18" bar no bother.

 

For bigger stuff where an 18" bar would be actually needed, I'd reach for one of the bigger saws.
