Replacing Old Cable Bracing

I'd be looking at pruning them to relieve sufficient weight off so that the cable bracing is then slackened off slightly. If its extra right now there's too much weight and could eventually tear out. It needs to allow the tree to flex

As already said- no not replace the original static bracing system with a dynamic one.

 

A local"tree consultant" talked the botanic gardens here in Dunedin to do that with a oak tree. We got sent to do it. Even before we started doing the work we said it was crazy.

 

Anyway needless to say the trees failed now. Waste of time, money and resources.

I would not use steel as the tannin in oak eats it.. Have seen loads of braced oaks pull bolts.

Who ever braced it in the first place needs a stern talking to aswell have never seen bracing done in this style do a tree favours.

for god's sake dont use cobra! use GEFA! it comes in two versions, static & dynamic, 99% of the time we want the tree to be able to move so that it can continue to put on reactionary growth, strengtheneing the weak union/s, cobra tried to catch up by offering rubber dildo's to slot insode the rope, these are NO SUBSTITUTE for Gefa!

first give it a good crown clean/thin to lighten the load then brace with the gefa xxx if the steel does go slack after the clean then cut it off but do not attampt to rip out any cable that is embeded xx

Sorry to ressurect a thread from the past!

 

I've found a beech with invasive static cable bracing fitted above a bark inclusion that the owner doesn't recall. This means it is at least 20 years old. It's still under tension and I can't seen any visible corrosion from the ground. As above, no intention of removing it but recommending a climbed inspection. If it's still looking alright, could it be left or should we be looking at installing a new system above it? Is there any decent guidance on this to refer to?

Do you have any pics ?
Where is it located? Is it static or flexible ?
It would be depending on different factors. Correctly fitted to modern knowledge/standards, any decay or faults.
Like you say inspect and make a judgments
