im 30 now am i to old to start climbing trees and be a tree surgeon i've had nptc chainsaw licence over a year and have cut loads of trees down from the ground, just wondering what age you stop going up the trees, im from bolton near manchester, and need some info on courses etc

Of course your not too old mate as long as you enjoy the job and your body's up to it? I love climbing trees and i'll keep doin it until my body packs in haha. Best course to get on is your CS38 and CS39.

As posted above as long as you are physically fit and willing to work hard then there isnt any reason why you cant start a career as a tree surgeon at 30.

 

I would try and have a go at climbing maybe borrow someones climbing gear and have a go before starting the expense of courses etc.

 

I knew a few lads in college that excelled in the theory side of things and chainsaw use on the ground but as soon as we started climbing they were gone!

 

Its a different ball game to felling so just make sure its for you, unless you have plenty of dough and dont mind spending out on training

 

Atm with the economy the way it is there will be alot of experienced climbers looking for work so dont expect to walk straight in to a job as soon as you are qualified, takes at least 5 years of graft before becoming a professional tree surgeon imo.

I never climed a tree until i was 34, got through cs38 looking forward o doing 39. It`s a tough job you will ache and it will hurt but if your happy to do it then go for it.

 

Contract climbing might be a tough line but if you can find a job with occasional climbing or in a team that has some younger fellas and you climb as and when and keep your aroel rescue up to geather you`ll be fine.

I'm 48 now and climb most days or i did when we had plenty of work (tks Gordon). I'm not probably as fast as the younger guys but go for quality not quantity.As for staying up longer I did try viagra but it don't work the same in trees more the pitty.
