15w/40 and all that mumbo jumbo

Piston Engine (aka recips) and Gas Turbine Commissioning Engineer in the Power Gen business for 13 years; PhD in Diesel Exhaust Emissions; lubrication a significant part of that. Also raced cars in the past.

 

FYI, a PSA XUD9A (peugeot diesel 1.9) IDI engine has been running non-stop (!) since 1998 in my old research lab at Plymouth Uni on RL 15W40 with UOA (used oil analysis) taken at determined intervals. Non stop because oil consumption has been negligible, and 1500 - 3000 rpm with auto-dyno load changes have meant fairly constant conditions. It's equivilent to millions of miles!!!

 

The old man was an engineer with Perkins diesel but I gravitated elsewhere. Am getting more of an interest as I age though. That Peugeot engine sounds like an amazing experiment.

The thing with universal oils is that they are a compromise in some motors.

 

If all oils were the same there would not be so many oils.

 

The Briggs engines mentioned should run on SAE 30 momograde oilin the UK climate, the use of thinner multigrades may result in some consumption.

 

Japanese motors such as Honda and Kawasaki should use a 10w30 oil.

And the 10w30 statement is supported by the fact that Honda's own brand is 10W30.
