how to calculate timber volumes, pls help

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have a wood of 25 acres and I am looking to find out how many cubic meters of soft wood we have approximately, I have counted trees in a .05 of an acre diameter and there is an average of 14 trees in this area and at chest height they average about 5ft in diameter and approx 90 ft high. Can you help me with calculating tonnage/ cubic meters I have. many thanks Doug.

You will need an FC forestry mensuration book (blue book). It is all in there how to calculate volumes of standing timber etc. However if you have not done this before, it is very very confusing. Idealy need somebody to go through it with you in person.

Good luck, I don't think I can remember now as its been about 15 yrs!

Google Hoppus feet or metres.

I have tables in feet myself being an old buffer!, you'll need a tape to measure girth (1 inch Hoppus is 4 real inches) and you will need to know usable length. These two measurements with the tables will give you volume.
