It isnt in the 'interests' of Stihl or Husqvarna to keep records of stolen saws as they sell more to replace the ones that get nicked from law-abiding taxpayers such as the people on this forum. Or am I being an old cynical bastard again as my wife tells me on a regular basis.

I to have asked this question and as far as I know there is no system , record, police, insurance or otherwise to record or list stolen small plant, an opportunity for computer minded folk to set 1 up ! I’m sure there will be sponsorship from the ? insurers to help fund this ( I have even suggested this to a computer person not a long way from here) I would be happy to make an enquiry to check before buying 2nd hand and also to check other items I was suspicious about, I am sure police would be helped by such a facility

It still makes me sick to see this after 4 saws were taken from the van and never to be seen again after 5 years , it cost so much to buy in the first place and too do it all again. A list of details given to dealer and garda but not a thing back.

What should we do put up a thread here with all details on stolen items to help each other ?

I'm sure there was a stolen plant registrar on line a few years ago...don't know if it's still about??

Every Stihl dealer are asked to register all the machines sold, it is a very easy online system for us to use. At the moment there is no incentive for the dealer to do this and I hear that some don't bother. We register every machine we sell as it only takes 30-45 seconds to do so.

We can then check by serial number who the saw was originally sold to. Also if you have you machine stolen and don't know the serial number we can look that up on the same system using your postcode.

What there isn't in place is a register for stolen machines, something I have on my never ending list of putting into place on our website.

It's not just Stihl or Husky, it's certainly other dealerships too. I've even been told that with certain machines it's not worthwhile making theft too difficult as the insurance replacement Market is just so big and profitable to the dealers that they wouldn't participate in such a recording scheme. Crime doesn't pay? I think it does. All the way through the system.

Our services - The National Plant & Equipment Register

It's a cost service to register your plant and it's mainly for large plant. They do register stolen plant IDs free but I have never used them.

In the past the FCA maintained a plant database for members but whilst still a member I have not kept up to date with this so the reduced circumstances may have caused this to be dropped.

CESAR also do machine marking and the cost was around £100/machine for things like mini diggers
