Oil Analysis - Diesel Engine Research

I spent 13 years in the diesel research industry before returning to the woods but that's another story.

 

I'm about to embark on a long term diesel engine oil analysis project similar to that which I did in labs in the 90's where multi-grade CC/D+ oils were tested in low-speed single-cylinder, medium-speed multi-cylinder and high speed multi-cylinder test bed engines.

 

The tests will be looking for TAN and TBN endurance (cross-over) under differing duty cycles (start-stop, medium load-medium speed, high load-low-medium speed and medium-load-high speed), MOFT performance, wear, viscocity, iron, brass, lead, copper etc, fuel dilution and all the usual suite of tests, flashpoint blah blah blah (limited targets).

 

We intend to test quite a number of "common" lubes and some less common ones, some mineral base, some semi-synth, some pao synth and some ester synth.

 

And now the point in telling you all this: If any of you has an oil brand you would like included please let us know and it will be done! Perhaps you'd like to know the durability of your chipper, mog or truck engine?

I buy a semi syn lube for the gensets we service. I also use it in our vans seems good nothing gone bang ? . I use caterpillar for my oil sample testing. The company that supplies our oil is specialised products in Dorset. The oil is reasonably priced as we buy 600 litres at a time would be interested in your test results. We have far more problems with coolant degrading than poor oil results.

We used to run Mobil Pegasus 605/610/615 ash # in Cat 3516, Jenbacher 320 et al, Cummins QSV etc but they are straight grades for base load generation at constant 1500 rpm. Motor Oil for Automotive / Plant only in this test. Think Mobil themselves did the UOA. Used to enjoy doing borescope. Oberdorfer did a 148 kWe unit with a very sweet Liebherr 6 cylinder, whoops derail!

I know a Guy who is like the Hamadryad of Oil, he used to come around as a rep of a company he simplified oil requirements for companies by checking their oil requirement specs and minimising the different oils needed on stock. He was well in to analysing etc.

 

The company started blending inferior Russian grades in their blends. He was not pleased so jumped ship and set up on his own and elected to sell Q8 oils.

 

I will be interested in the results. Good to keep up various skills and trades I think.

I have been a generator engineer since 1986 and I only just understand what he is on about :biggrin:
