Yet another question about trailer licence laws :)

This may spark up a bit of heat but I just have a little query. I dont have a pre 97 licence so of course I realise I cant to anything over 750 kg. But it came to mind earlier, can I tow a trailer that is RATED at 2.7ton but actually only weighs say 600kg and has less than 150kg of equipment on? Making it less than 750kg still? I think that makes sence :confused1:

I thought it was gross weight of 750kg max unbraked trailer on a post 97 licence. Towing anything bigger is out of your licence as its a larger gross weight

So you think its what the trailer is rated to as opposed to the net weight of the trailer itself at that point in time?

Aslong as your not towing a trailer more than 750 your fine the plod aren't fussed what the trailer can carry just what weight you have on at the time.

I dont get why you would want all this fussing just get the test.

Right got you. Its just because ive got the trailer and I just wanted to see if the test is necessary because ill only be carrying a couple of mowers anyway so dont need the weight. To be honest ill probably just get the test it is alot of faff

i always thought it was the stated gross weight of the trailer, say a trailer can weigh max 1.5 tonne, even if it didnt weigh more than 750kg unladen/part laden you shouldnt be towing it .im 95% sure thats what my trailer test instructor said to me .

this is another one of the urban myths that keep springing up concerning towing.... is your vehicle capable of exceeding the posted speed limit, yes, can you be charged therefore of speeding because your vehicle is cabable...NO, same with your trailer, you can ONLY be prosecuted if you ACTUALLY commit an offense, having the capability to do so is not an offense...It doesnt matter what plod or VOSA might like to think, It is what is actually written in the statute books, I know of no-one who has been prosecuted with an intent to tow more than they are licensed to tow.

why risk it if your only moving mowers get a trailer your allowed to tow then you know your correct.Towing a trailer bigger than you are legally allowed even if empty is asking for unnecessary hassle.going with the intent to overload is an offence its just if plod is aware or not.
