Just seen you're talking of a lwb tranny. I'd stay well clear of steel! By the time its built, carrying a couple of blokes and some kit, the payload will be less than 500kgs.

 

 

Agreed a 350lwb with steel tipper (as favoured by itinerant tarmac layers) will have a kerbweight of 2300kg add 300kg of two blokes and kit and you can only carry 900kg at best and remember the nose weight of the chipper.

 

Mind from the numbers I see loaded on the road no one pays much attention.
