any rope you like.

the bottom biner should be an oval, such as the petzl ok, the top one i use a dmm sentinel, because its really small, and the hitch is less likely to get stuck under it.

Correct the bottom biner is good to be the Petzl OK. I use the gator biner in the middle hole. I have been using the fly with the bee-line cord. Seems to work good for me. I have tried the top hole with the HMS biner with the ice cord to ascend in the tree but have yet to perfect it.

I like the hms mini quadlock in the middle hole of the hitchclimber,that is my only gripe with the hitch climber is the way the eye end can somtimes keep the hitch from locking.
