Squirrel damage or sun scorch

Are Hornbeam susceptable to sun scorch or is this just out and out squirrel hooliganism.

I first suspected the squirrels were taking advantage of loose bark caused by sun scorch after taking down a load of trees in front of these that we're shading them. I noticed though, that even round the back of the trees were being stripped and some were damaged that we're in the shade.

The teeth mark are everywhere, definately been chewed off

Yins must have some really long legged rabbits to reach up that trunk, eat that bark:lol. Look like them Rats with bushy tails call Squirrels been at it to me.

easy-lift guy

I couldn't make out the height in the photo's and it may not be the case here but rabbits standing on snow can confuse matters, I have only experienced squirrel higher up where the bark is thinner.
