Would it help hama if I said it forms dense tufts at the base of deciduous trees, and you'll kick yourself when you hear the answer.

Free or adnexed gills, whitish in this young specimen, becoming reddish brown with age. And a tough fibrous pliable stem which gets fatter toward the middle, and what you can't see in the photo is that it gets characteristically thin at the bottom.

Care to hazard a guess?
