Our u1500 has the crane mounted on the rear and tows a similar trailer to Skyhucks, we then have a U1200 with a chipper and chip box.

This set up probably cost less to buy than skyhuck's all singing all dancing single mog but for a one team set up, who I assume will only need the crane and trailer at the same time its probably the best set up for him plus if you put that crane onto the mog there would be no room for the chip box.

any of you guys see the set up acprice did a few years back on a 1650,

you could swap the body round on the mog so you could either have the crane behind the cab or at the rear. it was for sale a few years back at the apf. i wanted to buy the crane unit but it would cost to much to adapt to my 2150.

i wonder if the perfect unit is out there.

skyhucks must be pretty close.

i would much rather sacrafice the odd job because the crane is on the trailer, than loose the chipbox.

I dont like mogs because they are too expensive for what they are.

Definition of a mog:

A cross between and truck and a tractor, that does neither job well, breaks down a lot, and is either ancient or extremely expensive, or both.

I do have a small soft spot for landys, as they do the job they were designed to do, going off road, and they do it well, until they break down. Having said that, I have never owned one.

I'm a subbie, so I work with whatever there is. The best combo, imo, for most urban tree surgery is a 7.5 tonner and a 10 inch chipper.

Site clearances, forestry work, parks and estates are a different story. I'm sure there is the perfect work for a mog setup, but I cant think of anything that cant be done better with specialised equipment.

I think the appeal of the mog is as an all-in-one package that does everything. However while they are adequate at everything I think they fail to excel at anything.

I have had a Mog, and it put me off for life - I have also had landrovers, and despite hating some aspects of them, have just bought 2 more.

My issue with Mogs is the price. Due to their rarity, they are priced way in excess of their component value.

For a lot of the work we've been doing recently, a 1200 / 1600 mog would be ideal, with a decent chipper on the back. but when I'm asked to pay £15k for a 4x4 thats 25 years old, and worn out, I object. I can get a low mileage 10 year old 1820 mercedes 4x4 that uses heavier or identical components for £6k...

you are right about the price for mogs, i think its because they never took off in this country.

I've just done that very thing, and my 26 tonne hookloader and 14t pm crane should be here in tuesday.

I don't really like mogs they are just usefull for some jobs, our u1200 can get places that our 3.5 tonner & 7.5 tonner can't i.e. round narrow access roads in cemeteries without needing to reverse with the chipper or they drive into fields where tracking the tracked chipper might be too time consuming.

I like to have options when programming work so I will keep a mog and chipper combo.

Your right about the expense in running them.

We have just been investigated by HMRC for the second time in less than a year regarding running them on red, and now have to run both mogs on white, and parts can be frightening when compared to say an Iveco.

As for landrovers, they just annoy me, the bloke I worked for about 12 years ago had a normally aspirated defender 90 with no heaters and typical no door seals, I had to drive it all over scotland during the winter months towing a 3.5tonne tipping trailer. I swore down then I would never buy one for work.

I did buy my lass a freelander TD4 which has been alright for the last year or so but defenders are a no go area.
