Karabiner help

Hi there.

I recently took part on a mewp operator course and CS47. I now have both tickets along with others. As a ground person, i've never really taken any notice of arb equipment, however I'm now getting confused!

We will be hiring a mewp at work from time to time, and will be collecting a mewp kit. e.g. harness, lanyards, karabiners etc. I've been handed the task of trying to find some karabiners for a decent price. After talking to the person running the course, he recommended 3-way locking karabiners for the lanyard.

After looking around, there seems to be a lot of scew-lock too. So my question is, can you use screw-lock karabiners, and what should I be looking for in them for using with mewp's?

Any help would be greatful.

Many Thanks.

Rob.

No you can not use screw gates.

they are generally now just used in rock climbing and for tree work 3 action autolocking are all you should really be using.

most arb suppliers will still sell the odd screwgate but they will all sell more 3 action.

choice is usually dependant on use and user.

just take a punt really.

I would suggest oval ones for that use.

The last time I used a mewp the karabiners were screw lock attached to the base in the basket, didn't really consider the pro's and con's . They were supplied with the machine and worked well.probably quicker to undo the three way apart from that little in it, personal choice I think.:001_smile:

Remember there are differences between what is allowed in the Height Safety industry regarding equipment and the Arborist industry. many people in the Height Safety industry use Srew-Gate which is perfectly acceptable and generally MEWPS are deemed and seen as Height Safety. MEWPS operators will use full body harnesses with a restraint Lanyard which is attached to the bucket so both screw-gate and 3-way are acceptable for this application. Where we in the Arborist industry use light-weight aluminium karabiners many height safety companies will use heavy steel karabiners which we see as for rigging purposes.

ISC can offer a complete range of karabiners for this application Fletcher Stewart

MEWPS Harness: Fletcher Stewart

Restraint Lanyard: Fletcher Stewart

All these are available from good retailers

Yes you must use 3 way not screw gate, I have always used ISC and DMM, but am just starting to use rock exotica and they seem really nice just the gate operate towards you not away, but not really a concern from a mewp, as one clipped in that's it until you get out.

Probably looking arounf £15.00 per clip.
