Wow love the colours in the metal from the forging.

Takes a lot of skill to make a good knife that is strong, tried making one at school, didn't last a test in the vice and broke along a weak fracture point. Didn't harden and temper it properly.

Wasn't made from a chain. Just some scrap steel from projects.

You don't need a forge really just a good oxygen cetelene torch. And some fire bricks form an old burner.

Wow sean they are some very fine blades you make, how will the mix of mettle affect the strength of the blades or are these mostly dress /ceremonial blades?

Lot of info on hundreds of posts on the I forge iron website Blacksmithing Forum | I Forge Iron

Lot of confusing terminology about "damascus steel"

The original genuine Damascus steel was indeed made in Damascus using iron ingots from India which had certain critical elements alloyed into them. The spectacular banding & strength was produced by special heat treatment iusing techniques now lost.

Modern "damascus" is produced by "pattern welding", repeated forging & folding over of alternating layers of steel of varying compositions. A technique also used on AngloSaxon swords.

A friend of mine used to make knives and I had planned on making one with him but it takes alot of hammering and welding with borax to get it right its better to use a power hammer or they can be brittle, they do look very nice though its suposed to be better to weld them to another core of metal, like an iron bar.
