I'm clearly not in the real world then ... :001_tt2:

You'd never use a ladder in competition, college or when doing a ticket because they are seen as bad practice in a red tape sense. Not saying this is why I don't use them, I know we all do things (inc me) that by the book are deemed as bad practice.:

Clearly not

colleges, competitions and tickets aren't the real world though they try but there not the same.

Not getting this real world reference idea ... so people that ascend 200ft+ redwoods without ladders are not in the real world :confused1:

Ok a lot of people use them in this 'real world' for the obvious benefits they have, I get that.

It's a personal choice rather than 'people that don't use ladders are not in the real world'.

Fully aware of that mate :001_cool:

Climbing is a relatively new thing for me (about 19 monthes at college and in work). I've been working landscaping/tree work for the last 5 years though so I know the difference between college and work. I've grounded for some great climbers some using ladders and some not.

I use a ladder because I am getting old and I have smoked too many rollups and drunk too much beer.

The very thought of hauling my but up a tree when I can walk.. makes me gasp for breath.... sets me arthritis off too:001_smile:

Not knocking people for using ladders, it's your choice. Just saying personally I feel no need for them.

20-30ft street trees, again why is throwlining (or even rope throwing on that size) going to take more than a few mins to get a line in.

I also agree with skyhuck on the professional image thing. BUT as I say clearly some people have the complete opposite opinion to me, so lets conclude ladder use as marmite ... but I think we knew that already :laugh1:

I've got to do as many as poss in a day, as I come down one tree I go straight up the next. One of the guys has already put the ladder up the next tree for me.

If you have to body thrust the first 10 foot of every tree, ten trees later you have thrusted an unnecessary extra 100 feet. I use a throwline but battling through a street of suckered up limes is a pain without adding throwline/rope throwing into it. But, each to there own.

Having a long career in this job means making life easy for yourself, not lazy, as the boss would say, but easy. I use as much of the latest tech/gadget and techniques as I can to make the tree work easier, more efficient so it gets done quicker, more can get done, the invoice goes in earlier so the money comes in quicker.

Spot on with marmite. SOOOO much of this job is personel preference.

  • 2 years later...

With my distel occasionally it will creep before I set it but it will never just not grip like some VT's.

Sold!, ive been umming and arring bout the VT or distel for the hitchclimber,

trying to make the switch from the prussik.

Ive a double eye 90cm OP and 75cm one... kinda feeling i need about 80cm! i guess its trial and error and no more double eyes for me, too costly.
