Just gearing myself up for my first bit of milling and have a bit of dilema.Im wondering how you decide if you should just plank it up and hope it doesn't distort in time or quarter saw it and plank the quarter sawn sections. The quarter sawn pieces have less chance of twisting but you get smaller planks. And just how do you get set up to mill quareter sawn timbers ?

To start with if you're new to milling don't worry about quarter sawing. Just focus on through sawing, getting everything cutting right and then stickering and if possible banding your boards afterwards.

After you master this then you can look at quarter sawing - but really it's only worth it with good size trees at least 3 foot diameter.
