Ryvarden ?

Wiki has this.......

Habitat and distributionF. fomentarius has a circumboreal distribution, being found in both northern and southern Africa, throughout Asia and into eastern North America,[13] and throughout Europe,[11] and is frequently encountered.[14] The optimal temperature for the species's growth is between 27 and 30 °C (81 and 86 °F) and the maximum is between 34 and 38 °C (93 and 100 °F).[15] F. fomentarius typically grows alone, but multiple fruit bodies can sometimes be found upon the same host trunk.[7] The species most typically grows upon hardwoods. In northern areas, it is most common on birch, while, in the south, beech is more typical.[13] In the Mediterranean, oak is the typical host.[11] The species has also been known to grow upon maple,[11] cherry, hickory,[8] lime tree, poplar, willow, alder, hornbeam,[13] sycamore,[7] and even, exceptionally, softwoods,[13] such as conifers.[11]

Not 100% on the Id here as it's up pretty high on this Poplar & shots are in no way conclusive.

If it is then the host is a new one for me.

David,

Judged from the photo's, I would say this is Phellinus ignarius. In The Netherlands and Germany I have only seen Fomes fomentarius on poplars, which grow alongside rivers or on riverbanks in so-called "Auwälder". In The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg and Germany, Fomes fomentarius mainly grows on beech and birch, and sometimes on Quercus, Tilia, Aesculus, Alnus and Salix. In Poland you can find it on old Acer along roadsides.

Sometimes Fomes fomentarius is mixed up with Fomitopsis pinicola, which not only grows on Pinus and Picea, but also on Fagus, Betula, Quercus, Acer (Poland) and Prunus (Germany, Sweden).

By the way, my encyclopaedia was written in 1996 and has not been reviewed since.
