the tractor winched its way up the beech stem to the attachment and broke, writing off the tractor.

 

 

That is terrifying, I never even considered the posibility of a tractor being winched into a tree canopy. The chances of that happening must be so remote??that realy emphasizes what a dangerous industry we work in.

It shouldn't be possible nowadays as winches have to fail safe. Boughton stopped producing a direct drive one in the 80s. Both the incidents I mentioned were before 1986 and involved tractors from the 50s or possibly earlier.

 

It's still a hazardous trade though.

my turner winch is direct drive,had a very hairy moment when thrust bearing went awol during winching,couldnt stop it pulling for about 5 seconds with the anchors down and attached to large ash,remember getting closer and closer to vertical before clutch bit! (stop cable was broken!,learned valuable lesson there)

As the song says "What doesnt kill you makes you stronger" like you i'm also a bit wiser unfortunately in my case a bit greyer too?
