If you get an iPhone, I'd suggest also purchasing one (or both) of these clinometer apps for measuring height of trees).

App Store - seeLevel - visual clinometer

How High or Far for iPhone, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G, iPad (3rd generation) and iPad Wi-Fi + 4G on the iTunes App Store

Both apps use the camera for aiming, making them easier to use than traditional clinometers, and I find them equally accurate.

I have been unable to find similar apps for the Android platform, but they may well exist

I have a tape and a Husqvarna 357xp to measure the height of trees! Does look quite useful though.

I'm just a bit concerned about the ruggedness (or lack of) of i-phones

With a proper case and a bit of common sense you should have no problems. There are many cases on the market, I use the Otterbox and it suits my needs well, Skull candy ear bus work well and are comfortable as well.:thumbup1:
