Runaway Defender Engine

In some circumstances, a diesel engine can start to run on its lubricating oil. If this happens, it bypasses the fuel system and any speed governer, it can't be switched off normally, and just revs up faster and faster until it's burned all its oil - if it doesn't explode first.

I've always wanted to know what it looks like when this happens...

Hi our 300tdi 90 did this 3 weeks ago in our case the oil seal in the turbo had perished and let oil seap/pour into air pipes and the engine ran on it's own oil very weird feeling turning off ignition then battery and still kept going so quickly stalled it and when smoke cleared towed it home to replace turbo and clean pipes out. Luckily no other damage was caused (visibly) and is now going strong again but I've never seen so much smoke out of a truck how that did.

A very expensive feeling that would not want again!!!

Isuzu troopers were prone to this when the injectors leaked diesel into the sump, filling it up.

There was a story ( maybe only that) about one on a motorway which started to burn its sump contents and accelerated away, overtaking a police car, which gave chase. The story has it that the driver was so confused that he did not think to knock it out of gear and stayed in the outside lane for some time with the police chasing until it ran dry. He was supposedly done for speeding and creating smoke, but I doubt that bits true.
