CE mark on equipment

And yet there are plenty of products without CE marks. What I am trying to get to the bottom of is if I buy something without a CE mark and it causes an accident. Am I going to be held responsible somehow?

Well I,ve been climbing on sterling htp access line for a few years now, it's not ce approved (I heard it maybe soon though) it is ANSI approved I believe, and myself and other competent persons have deemed it fit for purpose. I include it in my loler and it is checked every time I use it.

The rope has served me well and is upto the task I ask of it so I do not see the problem.

Same as the rope wrench should we not use it, hell no, I,ve seen ce approved kit fail!

Common sense should prevail, it,ll only cause an accident if it's not fit for use, or Inappropriately used then yes your responsible.

I thought CE marking was more a retailing issue in Europe as a means for stopping foreign imports. ie you cannot import goods without CE mark and retail throughout Europe but you can direct import goods without CE mark for own personal us. At present direct importing a 2 cyl tractor from china without CE mark as it is not approved for EU emissions standards for road use. Totally irrelevant as it will never be used on the road.

What engine does your tractor have? I used to own a boat with a 2cyl Chinese engine in it - 26HP. It was a copy of a 1950 English design and was absolutely awesome. They used the same engine in tractors - it think it was called a 295? Anyway it was a lovely slow revving engine and could move a 10 ton boat with ease. Again they were banned because of emissions.

I was suprized to find out what is involved in getting PPE equipment through European CE standards and how much it costs. Other standards are available around the world but tests vary for industrial use in the European community we should try to use CE products failure to do so may leave your insurance invalid and if providing PPE for staff may leave you liable for criminal prosecution. Can you justify in court using a non CE alternative should an incedent occur? Probably not.

You don't have to pay road tax

You don't need to get an MOT

You don't have to drive within the speed limit

You don't have to stop and look when crossing the road

All free choices that come with the democratic system in which we live. It's your personal choice but with choice comes responsibility.
