No prizes for guessing who won this war

Last time I had one of those stuck (on a knackered steering box) I removed the box/arm together. Padded out around the drop arm and then needed 5 full hits (17 stone tree surgeon in a bad mood type hits) with a sledge hammer to separate the two .

By then the old steering box (especially the thread) wasn't repairable.

I still love my landrovers though

I used to be “of that school” until I took a box in for exchange with the drop arm o still most firmly attached.

The wiry old geezer nicked the box over, tapped it round a degree or two with the toe of his boot and laid not more than three good clubbing’s on it with a weedy 4 pound hammer and off it came, it’s all about technique

I took the arm off because last time the ball joint went I used a kit, but couldn't change the inner part because it needed pressing out and to do that I needed to take the arm off. the price difference between the complete arm and a kit was very little so I have just changed the whole lot this time

i usually just run a weld (150amp) around the inner bush. as the weld / bush cools it contacts and shrinks by a fraction of a mm, enough to let it fall out without taking the arm off

I've put a discovery drop arm on my defender & put discovery track rods on. This gives you a ball joint thats easy to move at each end. You have to be a little creative to fit the steering damper or buy the HD QT track rods and the damper relocation kit.
