If its making a clicking noise then thats the solinoid working, sounds like the starter motor needs looking at, it could be jammed or more than likely just needs taking apart and greasing.

Prob best to take the starter motor off as its only a couple of bolts then check its working by using jump leads on it, just make sure your not holding it or near it when it spins! If it spins then your starter is working and your problem may be more serious, maybe a jammed flywheel. While you have the starter off it might be worth seeing if you can turn the starter ring by jamming a large screwdriver in one of the teeth on it, you should be able to turn it, might be a little hard to do but if that turns then you will know that your flywheel isnt jammed.

Hope this makes sence!

The solenoid throws a copper bar forward to bridge two huge copper contacts, the contacts can be burnt, so it will still "click" but not make contact so the solenoid can click and still be goosed. The way to check this is as I said above

Glad you found the problem I have come across this fault many times and often its a layer of corrosion on the battery terminals take of and clean well. We use battery terminal spray gets in there and neutralises the acid as well. And does not catch fire like grease.
