Big oak making funny noises.

Question

I've got a big old oak in my garden and it's started making odd cracking noises. Like a creak but louder and deeper. Quite disconcerting as my kids play under it. There is some dead wood I plan to take off ASAP. But it has some big branches sticking out and one of them falling would be serious. Anyone heard this kind of noise before? I wonder if a limb is about to fail. Need a good windy night!

Looking at the picture it looks like there is some buckling/burring going on about 3-4 metres up the trunk. What colour are the leaves in the summer and how big are they? I am thinking a brown cubical rotter is working happily away and it has attacked the cambium (living tissues) which is the tree is dying back. The tree is still savable with the the dead wood being removed and a light reduction back to strong growth points.

You could well be right but there are so many Oaks in decline before their time. All over the countryside I am seeing serious die back in crowns. The Oak Decline Syndrome or Acute Oak Decline is a very worrying phenomenon that is the result of accumulated stress from a number of different factors.

I'm not saying that this is AOD, but it is likely that a brown rotter alone would not produce such symptoms on a healthy tree.

My peneth worth. More photos please.

no offence to any of you guys but we've had one pic!

Do you really think its wise to start diagnosing of ONE pic, and not the greatest pic at that (again no offense:biggrin:)

It could be one of a number of many many things, to start throwing conclusions about is a bit silly but thats just my opinion:blush::biggrin:
