Help the aged

With it shaping up to be a cold winter.

How about a few free log deliveries to freezing cold old folk.

I've been toying with the idea for a while but don't have, hardly any seasoned wood myself and I know a lot of you are a bit sold out. Just thought I'd throw the idea into the pot.

Maybe could be done thru age concern, and local arbtalk groups.

If anyone has free wood in cheshire I can help with splitting and delivery, i.e got a bit of free time at the mo. Also can make the phone calls to find the freezing old folk.

Any one got any experience of organising this type of thing?

Great idea, in theory. Most elderly get winter warmer payments, for just this reason, so why for free? I know my parish gives 200 quid on top of govt payouts for the over 75's, but they all have central heating these days, so how many would this help? have no doubt it may be different in other areas. Most of the wealth in this country is in the Grey Pound, so I would say they can afford to pay. Why not the single parents too? Dont mean to poor cold water on your generosity, why not raffle off your wood in aid local needy folk?

I know if/when my folks get to the "help the aged" phase I would be far more comfortable knowing they can flick a switch to keep warm than start loading logs into a fireplace...I'm sure there will be a few die hard log burning ageds out there but for the most they will not be in a position to use free firewood..

great sentiment though, we should be thinking of people in need at this time of year especially.

A very noble idea, but really only workable if you have a surplus of cash and time.

Agree Mike!!

I would only do something like this if it was local and I knew where and to who the wood was going.

To be honest we have a very good welfare state and the only people going cold are those to proud or not capable of claiming, if you know of some one who is struggling, try to make sure they are claiming all they should and point out that they are not getting a hand out, by calming, but are merely receiving a return on the "insurance policy" they or their husbands paid into during their working life.
