And how many lives have been save by the prompt and responsible felling of diseased trees?

How do you quantify this statement Dave?

Where's the evidence to back it up.

How do you know that the felled trees would have failed ?

Is that not the whole point mate, we just don't know, so, IMO, if there is a fair risk I would err on the side of caution.

The real problem is the fact that we have such limited stocks of mature trees, due to decades of under planting, so we tend to hang on to over mature trees .

I'm of the mind that we should keep on learning and basing our proscriptions on informed opinion not gut feeling and possibly outdated resource.

This industry is in desperate need of moving onwards from erring on the side of caution.

Trees are assests NOT just nuisances.

And indepth investigation is warranted as often as is practicable :001_smile:

I think ONCE there are some well documented studies on the success of investigating and monitoring of diseased trees and a properly set down criteria for retention. Then we will be in a position to move forward in a professional and quantifiable manner.

At the moment it all seems very subjective.

I am in no way wishing to suggest that what you have done has not been done in a very professional manner, but at the moment it seems to me that the information required to make the call is somewhat lacking.

Yes they do but is it caused by Meripilus? in my experience, investigating roots, and grinding out stumps I think not.........

Meripilus is a saprophyte, IE they live on decayed wood [roots] could we be imaginative enough to think some other factor might be the cause of root decay, followed naturally by the occurrence of Meripilus..

I'm not saying that Meripilus cause the tree to fail, but,IME, it's a good indicator that the tree WILL fail.

If you find a body in the woods thats covered in maggots, it doesn't mean the maggots killed the victim but, their a fair indication that he's dead.

Masses of fungal fruit on MonkeyD's tree, very little in the way of Decay, I know where your coming from though Dave, might I suggest anyone with a Meripilus dilemma consider a root investigation, before opting for the chop...
