I now like Landys

One thing which must not be forgotten in all this talk of it not mattering whether Land Rover geeks would buy them 'because they don't buy new, they buy them second hand', is that one of LR's [and the Defender in particular] strongest selling points is residual value.

If no one will want to buy one of these things second hand in the way we do now, that will hit the residuals and there goes one of the strongest arguments for paying over the odds for a new car with Land Rover badge.

A Defender is a good investment for a business, they have a strong asset value even after writing down. A Freelander on the other hand, far less so. Other 4x4 or work vehicles, even less.

So while in the short term it makes sense to target the new car buyers, in the medium to long term the second & third owners need taking into consideration. There is a strong demand for used Defenders as proper working vehicles. This keeps prices for 3 year old vehicles ridiculously high. Personally I can't see anything which is designed to steal sales from Wranglers and Vitaras having anything like that demand. And that's when LR will suffer. They will wipe out the HUGE market for their product further down the line, and that will certainly affect sales of new vehicles.

The other issue with targetting 'lifestyle' purchasers is they are hideously faddy. What's cool one minute will be a horrible faux pas the next. Can you see anything like this staying in fashion for 60 years...? I certainly can't...

As a replacement for the vehicle on which one of the strongest brands in the world was built it gets a MASSIVE thumbs down from me I'm afraid....
