Yea get my own job and charge customer. Yes tool out lay is little only wear and tear.I can price at 120 but you just get under cut. True I'm working for a plasterers labourer s wage but you can't live on nothing so I'm just thinking of other thing s I could perhap s learn .is it possible to get a chance as a groundie with chain saw tickets and a chipper ticket?

 

Yes, it's possible but it is bloody hard going. I've been doing that for 3 years, am known as reliable, provide my own PPE and saws, have made good contacts and am useful at doing the above. I still do not manage to fill every week. If that is what you want to do, don't burn your bridges with your current trade. I did nearly 20 years as a croupier before starting as a groundie and find it necessary to work occasional fun casino jobs to boost my earnings.

Might add to it by mentioning I'm halfway through doing a law degree at the moment with the intention of being the next Charles Mynors. LOL Realistically, I will be happy extending my connection with the Arb world by working in the legal side of it.

I would be thinking about your age in starting although I do know somebody who is in their 40's and thinking of starting up,and I know people who have being doing it over 12 years and are only my age who are really skilled at their job but it's taken them 12 year's of hard work to get where they are atm. If your not happy with what job you have I personally think go for it do whatever you feel you can but make sure you have somthing to fall back on if it doesnt work out:thumbup1:

Rich, have you thought about something like hgv driving. Always work about. I'm a chippy myself working the sites, sick to back teeth of it but semi decent money. But when there is no work i go agency driving, saved my neck plenty of times. I will always work with timber in some capacity but its always handy to have a fall back trade. Good advice from stevie blair tho about lawn and hedge cutting to start out. I did that to get my foot in the door with nursing homes i used to manage.

I'm look for career change too. Away from landscaping and toward contaminated land. I was serious about the asbestos - the industry is pretty safe these days. Not megabucks, but certainly more than landscaping, e.g. £27k + company vehicle + benefits seems alright to me, considering at the moment, after business expenses etc, I'm scraping together £1k/month max for! The only side of landscaping I actually enjoy these days are the jobs that I sort out myself and price up to get people in to do because on these I earn better money and don't end up half dead at the end of the day.

I currently get some help from an HGV driver. He's done agency work for years and has the best driving record one could wish for.

He mainly works out of the Suffolk area but has travelled far and wide for the odd day's work.

 

He's not had a single offer for driving work since the end of november bar the odd "can you be in Aberdeen in an hour for two hours work please?":thumbdown:

 

I can't afford to pay him much, but he's glad to be able to work and know he can (or can't) be of use next week etc.
