Ifor Williams suspension lift

I know there have been several debates on here about fast tow forwarding trailers versus Ifor Williams'. I was just thinking that crane on my Ifor Williams would be more practical. I already have a hydraulic system on my landy to run the crane as well.

 

The only problem with dragging an Ifor Williams trailer into a woodland is the ground clearance. Has anyone ever looked into giving an Ifor Williams trailer a suspension lift? I wondered if I could knock up some leaf spring hanger extensions. It doesn't need much lift but enough space to get some larger wheels on it. Alternatively what about a body lift? I'm interested in anyones thoughts.

 

I've got an adjustable hitch on the landy so I'm not worried about hitch height.

The problem you can’t get around is the fixed position of the brake cable entry on the back plate, jacking the springs or body will give you a little more body clearance but the best you can do for the brake cables is add an inch with bigger tyres and maybe weld a bit of protection in to the back plate

Install a large lightweight skid plate between the leaves and the axle steel sections then no problem with stumps/rocks in the woods. Alternative is a NATO single axle which takes much more then the IWT.

if you can afford it id change the hubs to ones with the same pcd as your landy and stick landy wheel on it i did with my 8x4 trailer loads off clearance and you only need to carry one spare asit fits truck and trailer

Thanks SEAN TYNAN. I would like to put Land Wheels on the trailer but with an Ifor Williams flatbed trailer (LM85) you would need a big lift to get a land rover wheel in. The original tyres are very close to the body to begin with. And they are at least 16 inch overall diameter before you even consider putting it on 265/75/16s. How did you do it on your trailer or do you have the GD85 version with wheels outside the body?

I like the skid plate idea. I would just need to increase the departure angle, as the girder on the back usually takes lumps out of the ground offroad.

Could you not lower the spring hangers to increase the height of the body? Can you turn the back plate of the drum to change the cable location?

Not without grinding it off and welding it back on again

The backplates on my lm166 are bolted to the flange on the axle with 4 large Allen bolts, could you not just rotate round the flange.
