Drew, Council or private job? How did the owners react to the suggestion of coronetting the tree and did you get any comments from colleagues etc? I ask as I believe the practice is pretty new in NZ and just wondered about people's reactions.

sorry to jump in, wev been doing it for a few years now, and the picks look good, in the uk its now in the new BS3998- 2010 so that helps, i used to try and sell it but now we just mix it in 50% within a job, that way we can also see , in time, how well the tree responds, in comparison with traditional pruning techniques , the LPA are cool with that too, peoples reactions are ok once you explain why you are doing it, on the whole the trees respond well.

its good stuff.

Must be just us out in the wopwops. Hadn't heard much about coronetting except on arbtalk so it's all new to me and a lot of my colleagues.

Yeah same here,Would nice to be able to do it but everyone just wants there trees to look good and to have lots of sun light.

Drew, I think it looks particulary natural especially tying in well (aesthetically) with the non target pruned stub below it, that hasn't occluded.

Lots of flakey bark for all those niche micro oraganisms that need this specific type of habitat.

Can't make out from the shot, but are there any epicormic shoots on that branch out of sight behind the view,

or is it completely dysfunctional ?
