I recently came across my old axe/hatchet in the shed, that I was given to me when I was a kid by my dad to keep me out of his way when he was busy lol

Β

Anyway when I was checking it over I realised it's an Elwell! SoI've decided I'm going to rehandle it and give the head a good clean up. Just wondered if anyone has got any tips on cleaning up an axe head, or is it just a matter of plenty of elbow grease with wire wool and some wet and dry?

Cheers :001_smile:

You could go the full hog and get it machine buffed / polished , it would look absolutely awesome.

Β

That would look cool.Just stay away from the Stamp(s).I cleaned one up recently with a Wire Wheel on a disc Grinder.I wore a Welding Helmet as wires came off the Wheel.

I've just seen a sanding and polishing kit for angle grinders for a tenner, so will give that a go. I've also got a scythe and draw knife that might get a clean up too :thumbup1:

That's what I used on an axe that was over 30 yrs old, came up like new and it only took about 30mins to make a job of it.

Well worth it, then a shaft and a sharpen great axe for very little money.

My farrier has just polished his draw knife on a pedestal grinder/polisher, the result is just spectacular.. imagine what your axe would look like ? :thumbup1:
