Chainsaw from MEWP?

, as far as I am aware , if an operator holds a mewp ticket i.e. Ipaf relevant to the machine being used & that the chainsaw operator also holds cs 30 31 38 cs39 then the cs47 is surplus to requirements

 

I will contact Nptc directly to get their comment though

Yes I hold IPAF (1b & 3b) and cs 30, 31, 38 & 39

I was told that if you held a relevant MEWP certificate, 39 and 45 you didn't need 47.

 

Apparantly 47 covers some lowering and use of tag lines, which is not covered under 39 alone.

 

Holders of 47 may not use top handled saws from a basket, whereas holders of 39 could.

 

This was from a training provider, last year.

Hmmm, interesting, so 'belt n braces' is to upskill your CS39 to CS41 yeah to cover the 'ropey' bits.

 

Still of the opinion, but to a degree now dependnet upon the operation, that MEWP + CS39 = no need for CS47 (ALL "as was" of course given the new units and titles )

No worries, makes a change not to be me mis-quoting (n as an AA Tech person that is embarassing ) plus the CS45 does have some rigging stuff in it but I think it's all ground based.

It is true that if an operator holds an nationally recognised MEWP operator ticket

 

and also CS39 or the new equivalent that this would cover them to operate a chainsaw

 

from a MEWP (CS47) ‘in the eyes of ‘City & Guilds and the Health & Safety Executive

 

However, there are a number of local authorities here in the UK that do not accept this

 

and insist that all operators needing to carry out this task hold CS47 and they are perfectly entitled to do so.

Just to confirm that HSE's interpretation is the same as Kerry's i.e. someone using a chainsaw from a MEPW can either have CS 39 ( or new equivalent) plus IPAF or similar ticket or have CS 47 ( or equivalent). Clients however can stipulate which they prefer.
