Took the dogs out to a far field today for the first time since the gales. 2 Huge old Ash trees lying on the ground. I would never have felled them but now that's my heating sorted out for winter 2012/13. Work starts tomorrow.

This was a fine wind if you ask me. One was a good tree but just pulled out of the ground. The other was pretty rotten at the root by the look of it. You could hardly see where it had been.

I love a 100mph gale. Mother Nature then decides what we burn next year. She's probably far more qulified than me.

Same with me but 4 nice sized oaks and one monster oak in my case. The really big oak I would never have dreamt of felling, it's not rotten either. Good for business is this weather!

Just really lucky that there were no sheep under it as they do like to shelter under that tree.

Sweet. I need to find a way to deal with big oaks. I might just sell on the next one that falls for timber to be honest. Our usual policy is to ring it thin and then chop into blocks but it takes sooooo long to season. I believe it would be better to ring it in 12" lengths and then split it into long thin logs but I don't have anything that can do that apart from elbow grease.

That's my next problem, dealing with the trunk. The branches will be ok to log up and split for firewood.

Don't suppose you know how you go about selling the trunk for timber? I wouldn't know who to approach or how much to expect...
