Had to get this Whitebeam cleared up today, on closer inspection the roots had a white mycilium rotten look to them. It wasnt ther best tree but i hadnt noticed any fruiting bodies previously(not to say there wasnt any) I just wonderd what you rekon would have caused this (ROT) i would guess at Ganoderma sp? what do you think from the pics?

If ganoderma was the culprit I believe you would have seen a failure at the base of the stem and not roots. As well as fruiting bodies.

Culprit for this could have been merip due to root rot, can't remember 100% if sorbus is a host for merip.

I don't know but it's a good bit of photography. I saw a large ash root plate from a distance that looked similar ish. There was a county council officer there so I didn't stop and get the camera out.

How about Kretzmaria deusta? It;'s my favourite.:001_tt2:

I would guess even without seeing any of the associated fruitbodies or rhizomorphs, that this decay is synonymous with the strategy of Armillaria sp.

How are you so confident about this David? The fact of a whitebeam failing from the rootplate?

I wouldn't say I am entirely confident, merely offering up a possible agent.

Armillaria (from experience) often degrades (white rot) the roots of it's host (Butin/Lonsdale/Webber-Mattheck)
