Your thoughts please -Good or bad idea ?

I was asked to top this Mimosa and knew that if a frost was to settle on the cut it wood turn the stem black and die back would occur, the owners didnt seem worried and just wanted it topped (big job )

I've wondered in the past when cutting limbs in full sun, weather a thin disc could be left to shelter the cut, I severed the remaining bark and hope that the regen will pop the disc off in the spring.

What do you think a waste of time ?

Might work, either way its good to see people trying new things, its th eonly way we'll make progress. As the guy above said would you be able to return and have a look next spring/ summer?

Im tempted to go back tomorrow and make the cut again but then I could say the slight slant was part of the plan

i honestly thought it was to help shed the rain from the top of the cut!!! Good plan!

Yeah, you don't want a flat cut. Definitely looks like it could be a good plan.

Never worked on a Acacia dealbata before so don't know how well it callous' its wounds especially ones that have been "topped":001_rolleyes:

 

would the "ring" get in the way of any callous forming or would the callous then include this ring in the healing process?

 

Definitely not a waste of time as its this thinking outside the box that furthers progression in this industry:thumbup:

Its not ring barked I cut through the stem leaving only a small piece holding the disc on and then severed the remaining bark. Its brittle because the disc is only a few mil thick so I recon the regen will push it off.
