So with 1 light year being about 5,878,625,373,183 miles (6 billion or so) and Kepler22b being 600million light years away, thats only 35,271,752,239,098miles

So if we could travel at the speed of light which is exactly 299,792,458 metres a second or about 186,000miles a second then it would only take 189633076ish seconds or roughly just over 6 years to get there:thumbup:

Surely a light year is the distance light travels in a year, so if its 600 light years away that means it will take 600 years travelling at the speed of light?

Or has my brain missed something here.

I vote for the improbability drive as defined by Douglas Adams.

yep got my calculations wrong:blush:

1 light year = 5,878,625,373,183 miles

so 600 light years is 3,527,175,223,909,800 miles

the speed of light is exactly 299,792,458 metres a second which = 670,616,629 Mph

travelling at this speed over this distance, your right, it WOULD take 600years to get there, but......

I have since found out that we cannot just accelarate to the speed of light and reach maximum velocity, it will take on estimate anywhere between 10-15 light years to reach 98% speed of light and 10-15 to slow down again

thus making the journey there or there abouts, 635-640 years to get there

one other thing, when travelling at those speeds , things slow down by about a third, so 1 year aboard a vessel kepler 22b bound would feel like 3 years here on earth thus making it around 1900 years on earth before they got there...??!?!??!

Unless we prove einstein wrong:001_rolleyes:

That doesn't sound right somehow.... :001_huh: If something slows down by a third it takes a 3rd longer, not 3 times longer? :confused1:

So 1 year would be 16 months... 600 years would be 800...:001_huh:

Or have I got that totally ar&e about... :laugh1:
