Never seen or used a chainsawmill before? - Alaskan mill basic instructional vid

A vid I did for chainsawbars website but better posted here.

 

It's quite good in that it shows the whole process.

 

Was a bit knackered when I made this on a blowy day but it's a handy one if you're a complete novice to chainsaw milling.

How would you go about drying without a kiln, and how much are kilns?

Perfect timing! I have just borrowed an Alaskan off a friend to try planking some oak, ash and beech that is too big to go through the firewood processor. I have only got a Stilh MS260 with 15 inch bar - would you recommed a bigger saw or would a bigger bar (logs are 14 inch plus diameter) with a ripping chain be okay?

Just put it in stick (stacked and with battons equally spaced between the wood) make sure is out of direct light if you can and under cover.

 

For a kiln an old freezer body and dehumidifier work well.

A bit of a small saw for the Alaskan.... I'd be tempted if you can find a bigger saw if possible as it'll make all the difference.

Great video and great timing too.

Watched this last night and it got me thinking about getting an Alaskan again. (Had to put the idea on the back burner when the big end went in my MS650)

Found one on flea bay second hand, just won it now.

Will certainly be in touch about a mini mill.
