sharpening chipper blades

I've been paying £20 a set to have my entec knives sharpened at rip off lister wilder, was thinking about buying that machine off saturn and ringing some local companies up to do theres to cover the cost.

Ive always sharpened my own. As long as you follow the profile of the blade and they match, then your ok. As for sharpening them flat, its impossible to do as your always following the contour of the grinding wheel.

My blades are always concave.

How do you work out what hight to build your jig?

What do you do with those rounds of timber, are they varnished?

When your new blades need sharpening just eye them up sideways on so the blade follows the contour of the wheel exactly. The middle part of the jig moves up and down until they match. Once everythings lined up... grind away...

As for the wood thats some yew off cuts im seasoning ready for turning. Its all shiney as its covered in PVA glue to stop it drying out and splitting.

About 3 years ago I felled 2x huge Hollys and burnt the lot on site:cussing: i blody kick my self now.

Whats the difference between using PVA and the liquid wax?

Do you use neat PVA, please could you explain how you season types of wood?

Seasoning wood is abit hit 'n' miss you normally gota give 1"/yr air drying whatever the thickness..as a rule of thumb. So it can take a while.

I generally log all the decent wood (below 2ft diameter) into long lengths say 6-10ft seal the ends cover them with carpet and just leave them for 3/4yrs or so. Then i cut them up into the section sizes i want and seal it all over again and leave it for another year inside where its less humid..

Weigh the wood regulary until its weight levels off. ..then its reached relative humidity and shouldnt crack. Though centrally heated houses usually mess things up.

 

I use waterproof pva as its cheaper and just as

effective.

Trust me another guys baldes when resharpened are flat no curve i have held them so 100%. whats better tho:scared:

Im sure they are flat cause there not done on a bench grinder..

as for which does a better job ...i cant tell the diffrence .

I can get them sharpened for £5 for the pair but its a flat surface. The ones i have been supplied with are hollow ground just wanted to know if any one likes either one more.
