I took my 17 year old 8 strand nylon multiplat in the day our kit was due to be lolered , chatted with the inspector , told him that it had been stored in the loft for the last 10 years and it passed with him stating there was nothing wrong with it .

Can't remember if it was 6 months later or a year but it eventually failed even without any damage or extra visible wear.

 

I would be interested to here more about the circumstances around the storage and failure of the rope.

Great idea.

 

Browncow, try and buy it off the bloke next time you see him. We'll all have a whip-round to buy him a new strop.

 

We will then have a sweepstake to see who guesses the failure point closest, small prize for the winner and the proceeds to Childrens Trust.

 

The added bonus is he may live a little longer....

Not too much to tell I'm afraid the rope had done a few years work with one tiny nick , I retired it when I was given a fancy braided rope and put it in a bag in the loft and there it stayed.

I wasn't there when he failed it but I think he had previously only given it another six months and probably didn't want to push his luck.

 

I did see on another thread here there is no age limit on climbing kits but I'm no expert myself.
