felled 1000s of diseased larch in south wales at the begining of this year!

just clear fell, was all going for biomass [port talbot]

fc guy said if we had a dry hot summer it would slow the spread down, due to disease spreading in damp conditions:blushing:

we had to spray and clean our saws, boots and tyres everyday before leaving the woods

The ones felled at Marley Head were still stacked on the bank last time I passed (some time ago I admit). I live about 3 miles from Marley and have watched all this going on with some interest. There is plenty of new growth going on though which they have been careful to leave. Looks like most of it is Syc from a casual drive by.

The skyline view half a mile from my window is changing daily as large areas of larch are being felled. Every morning for 25 years we have sat in bed in the morning with a cup of tea and watched the sun rise through the hill top woods, now within a week the hill seems much lower, and the view vastly different.

BBC News - A38 trees in Devon cleared to slow disease

Is this really going to control the spread? I am sure research suggests so but surely a line of trees along a highway won't stop the rot? Your thoughts :confused1:

Its all to do with motile zoospores from Phytophthora, they can swim in water, this can spread along roads when wet and so spread the disease, felling of road side trees will slow the spread, its just one form of control.
