I'd go with Nothofagus obliqua on this one based on form (fairly distinctive), bark (grey with horizontal plates) and most importantly leaf (veins reach the margin between the points as opposed to at the points in Zelkova.)

Hey thanks for pitching in Willowboy, that's an interesting diagnostic. I so wish I had taken a leaf sample home and flattened it out for photography in good light. And it always puts me on guard to identify based on one sample, particularly a low-down in the canopy sample where leaf morphology can sometimes be atypical.

Yes, good point. When Id'ing trees and getting any leaf samples, it is much better to try to get ones from mid range in the tree, at different positions, variations (sizes) of leaves "can" grow to absorb different amounts of light.
