Was offered and bought a cheap hardly used Husqvarna 142 that had been sat in a garden shed untouched for 2 years. Quick clean and fuel change and fired up 5th pull.

Needs a carb retune. Uses the silly spline adjustment screws on the carb, getting a few with these adjusters in now so bitten the bullet and bought the appropriate tool.

Not a scratch on the saw and bar paint is mostly there to. Could do with a few more bargains like that!

Its that time of year again!

The winter service booking forms (1800) went out last week, and this little lot was booked in straight away

Just out of interest why would someone book a mower in for a winter service before the end of the growing season?

Because it's ready for the next growing season, Tbf the grass has slowed right down now, so after a few more cuts, it should be left to grow over winter without being cut

Had an MS460 in over the weekend - not starting when hot so first thoughts were carb related. Took the carb off but inspection through the exhaust port showed signs of seizure - the compression was good but took it apart and cleaned the piston up a little. Pics below before and after.

 

The cylinder was honed very lightly to aid it bedding in, the carb was cleaned and reset to factory. The cylinder had had the plug hole inserted as the thread had gone - this insert duely came out - bugger:blushing:

 

Put it back in with loctite 270 - high temp thread loc and left it overnight after heatig the cylinder a little - this morning, a good belt with a mallet and bingo - the insert was in solid:thumbup:

 

Did a number of other things including cleaning the clutch drum and greasing the needle bearing.

 

Tried to tach it and the saw cut out, re-started it and bang - cut out again:confused1:

 

Tested the spark and it was gone - took the side cover off and bingo:thumbup: the coil to flywheel gap was 3-4 times what it should be - route cause of failure found!

 

Re tached the saw - was running at 14,500 so backed it off to 13,300 and all is good, the low speed was lean and is fine now - should help starting - 48 hour turn around, owner very happy:thumbup:

I know it is getting near the end of the season but just thought its is best done after the last cut so it can be given a good clean.

No, as running the engine whilst the weather is warmer will show any faults before the machine is stored, and a mower should be cleaned after every use anyway

My regulars customers know that demand for my service is high so some get in early to ensure its done. We could not do them all if they were left for another month.

Actually its not unusual to cut all through the winter in this part of the country, maybe not ss often, but many mowers do not get 'put away' as they might further north.

a day for stihl today. ms200t, very fast idle. butterfly sticking open.

 

880, tries to rip your arm off when starting, checking this one tomoz, going straight to the flywheel.

 

230 i think, running funny, took air filter off and there is excess fuel going into carb, so checking meter valve.

 

and a km combi tool that had broken its pull cord, its brand new aswell. new cord and all is well, no signs of wear around the pull start assembly. or sharp edges. this pull start assembly is strange, uses two springs on either side to create a delay in the pull so it builds up then just pulls, bit like the elastic pullers but not.

Very true I used to service a clean my mowers in the autumn but just service them as necessary not as the phone always goes for one last cut.
