PTO Chippers on over hp tractors

The comment about a correctly adjusted slip clutch made me pause.

 

What is a correctly adjusted shaft?

 

How is it achieved on different machines?

 

How often do you need to do it?

 

I came across a unit and the gearbox had been ripped of It's mounting because the shaft was not set properly since new and information from the original supplier was not forth coming!

the TW PT-300H runs on a 1000rpm PTO shaft, and performs exactly the same on both a 200hp and 120hp machine.

Rob, did you buy that TW300? That has a slip clutch on the shaft, how is it adjusted and to what spec?

It's not my chipper. I know it's belt driven from the shaft but I'm not sure on it's adjustments in other parts of the machine.

Your chipper will probally be 540 pto speed , rather than reving the tractor to 1800 rpm try putting the tractor in 1000 pto speed which it should have if it a big tractor and just rev it a tiny bit , its shouldnt be to fast and will allow a bit of give it will also use less fuel ! This isnt idot proof !!!

Yes, there are belts that link the shaft to the flywheel. As the shaft is higher on the machine and it has the hopper and flywheel lower the belts help to keep the pto shaft straight at working speed, not that it makes any difference if it's on a slight angle, but it definitely has belts between the two!
