What would you use to fill this gap?

sand another piece of the same wood, mix it with wood glue and smear it in, when it dries just sand it off, it'll match up nicely and if done right you'll barely notice it. have a practice on some scrap bits first though to make sure your happy with how it looks.

Cheers fella that's what I was thinking down those lines...Unless there was sn easier alternative but I guess you won't get the match.

There are special glues specifically for this purpose Matty, which dry particularly clearly.

I am desperately trying to remember the one I used to use.

It comes in a silver tin........

It may have been Sikkens.

I would glue clamp and sand, as sometimes if you pack a split with dust and glue it can make it split more. also if the split gap is to small it would pointless doing anything with it, an option would be to cut split bigger and glue and fill in layers (like you would filling a crack in a wall).

Personal I would use either a router or circular saw to make a clean groove and glue in a thin slither of the same material.

rip it off and smooth out your new edge by sanding and live with a slightly slimmer table, simples.
