strange find on beech

Thought I would share how this Beech is getting on in decline shedding its top , I feel it is a good example I have come across of beech with high fruiting of Ganoderma and meripilus, kretz at its bace with signs of armilliara ,also oyster seen high up,

2013-17 .

Great set of images Ben, always interesting to watch the rate of decline and habitat creation with these big mature trees. Guessing this tree is in a low target area so being left to decline and dismantle under its own steam?

Apropos of not much really, I was sad to see this landmark beech at the top of bury hill near Arundel had snapped in half on a recent trip to the UK.

 

It  was one of those with many low branches in the ground forming a mini forest type effect.

 

I’m sure many local arbs knew it well.

 

Seem to be the thing with beech, just when they’re at their best, they’re thinking about throwing in the towel.

Thanks ,Went to check after the strong winds last night had a feeling this was going to happen soon it has finally shed its top at the point of the oyster hopefully it will carry on as a natural pollard for a few years

Yes in a no target area , this was definitely on if the oldest beeches maybe one of the original planting of the landscape could even of been on view at the time of the artists impression on the back of the new £10 note ?

That must of been a impressive beech great that is got chance to layer some of its limbs ?
